Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (dough)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups diced apples
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (filling)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (streusel)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (streusel)
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter (streusel)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In another bowl, whisk warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Combine wet and dry ingredients until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. Mix diced apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in another bowl.
  4. Prepare streusel by combining flour and sugar; cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 8 pieces. Shape into balls and indent centers.
  6. Spoon apple filling into each bun's indentation and sprinkle with streusel.
  7. Cover lightly and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Prepare glaze by whisking powdered sugar with milk until smooth.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over cooled buns before serving.
